In my interview with Maria, she could not recount much about the fire that tragically took the lives of her Mother and young sister. She sustained heavy smoke inhalation which deprived her brain adequate oxygen that affects her memory to this day. Maria’s father was not at home at the time and was at his daughters side through out her recovery. He met and eventually married Maria’s new Mom who worked at the burn center, nursing Maria through her painful recovery.
